Sport

Rugby League 2014 at Melville High

The Melville High School Sport Program is aimed at ensuring all students have the opportunity to develop and enrich their lives through participation in sport and recreational activities. The school aims to provide opportunities in safe and stimulating environments where a student may follow a pathway to sports participation and, further, to representative level opportunities.

The MHS Sport Program objectives are to:

  1. Encourage lifelong participation in sport for all students
  2. Encourage social interaction, team work and positive sportspersonship amongst all students
  3. Provide a stimulating, safe and supportive environment for enjoyable participation in a wide variety of physical activities
  4. Engage with the wider Macleay Community as well as the MHS community to provide for the allocation of appropriate resources and facilities
  5.  Provide students with enrichment opportunities to pursue their talents and to participate in representative sport.

CHS Competitions

Melville high is successful and strong participant in the NSW CHS interschool knockout competitions. Our school competes in a range of interschool sports in the NSW CHS competitions and other local competitions, including:

Rugby League, Rugby Union, AFL, Football (soccer), Tennis, Softball, Baseball, Hockey, Waterpolo, Cricket, Touch Football, Squash, Beach Volleyball, Basketball, Golf, Netball, Surfing, Futsal and Dance Eisteddfod.

Sports Carnivals

Annual carnivals are held in Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country running.  These are held on a House competition basis and students compete for Championships on an age basis. Non-championship events are conducted on a year-by-year basis with novelty events being conducted to encourage participation by less motivated or able students.

For each carnival a winning House will be determined by a combination of entry points awarded for participation as well as points awarded for student results. The winning House of each carnival and the House with the most points from all three Carnivals and Commendations will be awarded with the perpetual trophies at the end of year Sports Presentation.

Attendance is compulsory at school carnivals and students are encouraged to wear House colours to these whole school events.

Sport House Structure: The student population is divided into one of four sports houses dependent on the first letter of their surname (though this has the potential to change based on student numbers in each house group):

• Macleay: A-D (Red)        • Maria: E-K (Yellow)        • Belmore: L-Q (Blue)          • Kinchela: R-Z (Green)

Why we think sport is important at Melville HS:

Sport should be viewed as an integral part of a student's education and is organised to satisfy the following objectives:

  1. To encourage the enjoyment of physical activity and the acquisition of motor skills
  2. To encourage social interaction and interpersonal skills in social and team environments
  3. To provide for the development of personal identity and a sense of personal achievement through participation in sport
  4. To introduce and expose students to leisure and recreational activities that may enhance lifelong physical activity
  5. To develop physical fitness and promote healthy lifestyle habits while allowing opportunities for controlled emotional involvement in competition
  6. To provide students with enrichment opportunities to better pursue sporting interests or talent identified areas
  7. To inspire student allegiance to their House Group through participation and competition in whole school events such as swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals.
  8. To present to the community a set of school values involving pride, responsibility, courtesy and respect in the school and to showcase the quality and depth of our school's curriculum.
